Yamaha has introduced a new motorcycle to its Indian R-Series lineup, and its arrival could have an impact on the future positioning of the Yamaha R15M. The new Yamaha YZF-R2 sits above the R15 in the company’s lineup and brings a larger 204cc engine, more performance-focused hardware and additional electronic features.
The R2 is scheduled to reach Indian dealerships in mid-September 2026 as a 2027 model. Yamaha has officially positioned it above the R15, creating a new step between the popular 155cc supersport and the larger R-Series motorcycles.
This new positioning has raised questions about whether the R15M will continue as Yamaha’s flagship 150cc R-Series motorcycle in India. However, Yamaha has not officially announced that the R15M is being discontinued. New Yamaha R2 Sits Above The R15
The biggest development for Yamaha’s R-Series is the arrival of the YZF-R2.
According to Yamaha, the R2 has been developed specifically for emerging markets and is positioned above the YZF-R15. The motorcycle uses a newly developed 204cc liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine and a lightweight chassis designed around supersport riding characteristics.
Yamaha says the R2 weighs 149 kg and uses a newly designed steel tube diamond frame. It also gets a number of electronic features that are unusual for this engine category, including an electronically controlled throttle and Yamaha Ride Control.
The company is offering the R2 in three versions aimed at different types of riders, from everyday use to more performance-focused riding.
Yamaha R2 Gets A New 204cc Engine
The new Yamaha R2 is powered by a 204cc, liquid-cooled, four-stroke, DOHC, four-valve single-cylinder engine.
Yamaha says the engine was developed to deliver class-leading maximum power in the 126cc to 200cc segment. It also uses a semi-dry sump lubrication system designed to reduce internal resistance and support higher power output.
The engine is paired with Yamaha’s electronically controlled throttle, known as YCC-T. This technology allows the motorcycle’s electronic systems to manage throttle input more precisely.

The arrival of the R2 means Yamaha now has a newer, larger-capacity R-Series motorcycle positioned above the R15.
That could make the R15M’s positioning more complicated, particularly if Yamaha wants to maintain a clear price and performance gap between its R-Series models.

The R15M remains considerably lighter, with Yamaha listing a 141-kg wet weight. The R2 is listed at 149 kg, but it uses a larger 204cc engine and a more advanced electronic package.
