BMW has unveiled the eighth-generation 3 Series, bringing its long-running sports sedan into the brand’s new Neue Klasse era. The new BMW 3 Series combines a redesigned exterior and technology-focused cabin with a wider choice of powertrains, including petrol engines with 48V mild-hybrid technology and, for the first time, a fully electric BMW i3 based on the 3 Series.
At the top of the petrol range is the new BMW M350 xDrive, which gets a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six engine, 48V mild-hybrid assistance and 437 hp. Meanwhile, the electric BMW i3 50 xDrive brings dual-motor all-wheel drive, BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology and up to 912 km of claimed WLTP range in markets where that figure applies.
New BMW 3 Series: What’s New?
The eighth-generation BMW 3 Series introduces a significantly updated design while retaining the sedan’s familiar proportions. BMW has used its Neue Klasse design language across both combustion-engine and electric versions, giving the models a more minimalist and modern appearance.
The front gets a new interpretation of BMW’s kidney grille, positioned alongside redesigned lighting elements. The body features sculpted surfaces, wider tracks and pronounced wheel arches, while the rear receives horizontal three-dimensional tail-lamps.
The M350 xDrive gets additional M Performance details, including a rear spoiler, M-specific exterior elements and four exhaust tailpipes.
The electric BMW i3 has its own slight dimensional differences because of its dedicated electric architecture. BMW says the i3 measures 187.4 inches in length and has a 114.1-inch wheelbase, while the combustion-engine versions have a 112.6-inch wheelbase.
BMW M350 xDrive Gets 437 HP
The new BMW M350 xDrive replaces the previous performance-oriented position in the 3 Series range and becomes the flagship petrol-powered model at launch.
Power comes from a 3.0-litre inline-six engine paired with 48V mild-hybrid technology. The combined system produces 437 hp and 428 lb-ft of maximum torque.
The electric motor is integrated into the transmission and can provide up to 17 hp of additional assistance. BMW says the new engine also benefits from updated turbocharging, Valvetronic technology and Miller-cycle combustion to improve efficiency and performance.
The M350 xDrive comes with BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system and an eight-speed Steptronic Sport automatic transmission. It can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds, while the top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph when equipped with sport tyres.
For drivers looking for additional chassis performance, the M350 gets Adaptive M Suspension, variable sport steering, an M Sport differential and M Sport brakes as standard.
BMW M350 Gets New Drift Moment Feature
One of the more unusual additions to the new M350 xDrive is BMW’s Drift Moment feature.
The system can direct drive power to the rear wheels when activated through the central display. It is designed for controlled slides and is intended for use with DSC switched off.
BMW says Drift Moment will become available during 2027 and can also be delivered to already-built M350 xDrive vehicles through a software update. The feature is exclusive to M Performance models such as the M350 xDrive.
BMW i3 50 xDrive Offers Up To 912 Km Range
The biggest change to the 3 Series family is the arrival of the fully electric BMW i3.
The new i3 is built on BMW’s Neue Klasse architecture and uses the company’s sixth-generation eDrive technology. It features newly developed cylindrical battery cells, an 800V electrical architecture and bidirectional charging capability.
The i3 50 xDrive uses two electric motors, one on each axle, providing all-wheel drive. In markets where BMW quotes the higher WLTP figure, the model offers up to 912 km of claimed range.
Specifications can differ by market and testing procedure. For example, BMW’s US announcement quotes an estimated 446–468 miles of range based on preliminary EPA testing, rather than the 912-km WLTP figure. This makes it important to identify the market and testing standard when comparing the new i3’s range.
The i3 also supports DC fast charging at up to 400 kW. BMW says the charging system can add a substantial amount of range in a short period under suitable charging conditions.
New BMW 3 Series Gets Panoramic iDrive
Inside, the new BMW 3 Series receives one of the biggest technology upgrades in its history.
The dashboard is centred around BMW Panoramic iDrive, which combines BMW Panoramic Vision, an available 3D Head-Up Display, a 17.9-inch central display and BMW Operating System X.
The system is designed to reduce the number of conventional physical controls while putting more information directly into the driver’s field of view.
The new interface is shared across the electric and combustion-powered versions of the 3 Series, further strengthening the connection between the different powertrain variants.
Petrol And Electric Versions Share The Same 3 Series Identity
BMW is taking a different approach with the new generation by offering customers multiple powertrain choices within the same model family.
Alongside the M350 xDrive, the launch petrol range includes the BMW 330 and 330 xDrive. Both use a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with 48V mild-hybrid technology, producing 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque.
The M350, meanwhile, is positioned as the performance-focused six-cylinder option.
On the electric side, the BMW i3 50 xDrive brings the long-range flagship specification, while the i3 family will expand further. BMW has also confirmed that the i3 M60 xDrive will join the range in 2027.
New BMW 3 Series Gets Advanced Driver Assistance
The new 3 Series also introduces updated driver-assistance technology.
BMW says the model family offers SAE Level 2 driver-assistance systems and active safety functions. Depending on the market and specification, the system can provide hands-free highway assistance under defined conditions.
BMW’s US specification says the hands-free highway function can operate at speeds of up to 85 mph on suitable roads. However, the system remains a driver-assistance technology rather than fully autonomous driving.
BMW 3 Series Production
Production of the electric BMW i3 has started at BMW Group Plant Munich, which has a long history with the 3 Series.
BMW says the Munich plant began series production of the new i3 in August 2026. From 2027, the facility is scheduled to focus exclusively on fully electric vehicles.
The combustion-powered 3 Series models will be produced at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing in Germany, while key electric-drive components and engines come from BMW facilities including Steyr in Austria.

New BMW 3 Series India Launch
BMW has not yet announced India-specific pricing, variants or a confirmed launch date for the new-generation 3 Series.
The specifications revealed so far are therefore based on global and market-specific announcements. Indian specifications, equipment levels, powertrain availability and pricing could differ when BMW confirms the model for the country.
For Indian buyers, the arrival of the electric i3 could be particularly significant because it brings the 3 Series nameplate into BMW’s latest EV architecture while retaining the familiar sedan format.
2027 BMW 3 Series: What Makes It Different?
The new BMW 3 Series represents a major transition for the nameplate. Instead of choosing between completely separate model families, buyers can now choose between petrol, mild-hybrid and fully electric versions of the same-generation sedan.
